I then transitioned to higher education, teaching at TEI of Kozani and Chalkida, and later at the University of Nottingham (1990-92). In 1972, I earned my M.Sci. in Biochemistry from the Chair of Biochemistry at Leningrad State University, Leningrad, Russia. 🧬 From 1972 to 1975, I pursued my Ph.D. at the Petrov Research Institute of Oncology in St. Petersburg, Russia, focusing on the biochemistry of nucleic acids in both normal and malignant tissues. My Ph.D. thesis was titled “A comparative study of low molecular weight nuclear RNAs in normal and tumor tissues.” 📚 Between 1978 and 1979, I underwent postdoctoral research training in the Lab of Tumor Cell Biology under Dr. R. C. Gallo at the NCI, NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA, specializing in molecular oncovirology. 🔬

In 1981, I began my career as a Molecular Biology Lecturer at the prestigious Boarding School №45 for especially talented children, attached to St. Petersburg State University. From 1983 to 1987, I lectured on the Biochemistry of nucleic acids at the university’s Department of Biochemistry. I founded and served as Deputy Director of the MPH Program at St. Petersburg State University from 2005 to 2012, where I also lectured on HIV/AIDS Epidemiology & Prevention. Since 2012, I’ve been the Founder and Chief of the St. Petersburg Seminar on Molecular and Evolutionary Biology. Between August 2020 and September 2021, I assisted in adapting screening instruments for detecting alcohol and drug abuse in Rwanda using ACASI 🍷💊. In late 2021, I contributed to research on the impact of COVID-19 on CNS injury treatment and outcomes 🧠. Recently, I authored “Challenges and opportunities to improve efficiency and quality of prehospital emergency care using an m Health platform,” published in the African Journal of Emergency Medicine in September 2023 📚.

Research focus

Dr. Sharmistha Jayaraman’s research focuses primarily on improving prehospital emergency care and trauma management in low-resource settings, particularly in Rwanda. Her studies encompass various aspects of emergency medical services (EMS), including challenges in locating emergency scenes 🚑, enhancing efficiency through m Health platforms 📱, neurotrauma management 🧠, and the epidemiology of trauma, such as motorcycle crashes 🏍️. Additionally, Dr. Jayaraman investigates the initial management of traumatic brain injuries and factors influencing HIV testing among emergency patients. Her work aims to improve healthcare outcomes by addressing critical gaps in prehospital care and emergency response systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
